Every morning, before anyone else in the house is awake, I do the same small thing. I drink a full glass of water, and I take my supplement. That’s it. No big plan, no hour of quiet meditation I don’t actually have time for. Just water, and one small act of alaga, gentle, patient care, before the day asks anything of me.
I used to think wellness meant one version of doing it right. Wake up early, meditate, journal three pages, exercise, eat clean, be endlessly patient, connect deeply with everyone in your life, all before 8am. I would look at that list, feel exhausted just reading it, and do none of it. Or I’d start strong, last four days, and quietly let it go, the way most habits quietly get let go.
Here’s what I understand now that I didn’t back then. The problem was never the habit. Water is simple. A short walk is simple. The problem was that I had no way to turn a simple habit into something that actually stayed part of my life. I needed a way to hold it, not just a reason to try it.
That’s what the Alaga Lens became for me. Not a new habit to add. A way of looking at any habit I already wanted, water, a walk, a page in a journal, and turning it into a ritual I could keep, not just something I tried for a week and abandoned.
You are a whole self, and also a relational self, connected to your kapwa, the people who hold you and who you hold, and to the environment around you. We do not heal alone. But that doesn’t mean your path looks like anyone else’s. You have your own journey, your own values, your own starting point. What works for me might not be the right first habit for you, and that’s not a problem to solve. That’s just true. The lens stays the same. What you run through it is yours to choose.
Five small movements, one at a time.
Allow Small. You don’t need the big version to start. You need the small version you’ll actually do tomorrow too.
Link to Alaga. A habit tied to guilt fades. A habit tied to care tends to stay.
Add Delight and meaning. The habits that last are the ones that feel good to return to, not just the ones that are good for you.
Grow Into Her. You don’t become her all at once. You grow into her, one small repeated moment at a time.
Progress is not about being perfect. It’s about noticing the small pockets of ginhawa already in your life, and being grateful for them.
Arrange Support. Nothing you build alone survives long. The people and the space around you decide whether a ritual lives or dies.
That’s the lens. Five small movements, and inside each one is a way of turning something you already want to do into something you actually keep doing.
This isn’t a race, and you’re not behind. Life is a journey, not a finish line you’re failing to reach fast enough. You don’t need a new habit today. You need a way to keep the one you already want, and that’s what this lens is for.
Start where you are. Start small. Let it grow into her, the mother who is intentional, present, and living with purpose, one morning at a time.
With love,
Kristen
